Princess of Grief

Painting “Owning Our Sadness”

Vania Seyram Sulley is a Ghanaian-American multi-disciplinary artist and art therapist currently residing in Chicago. She engages in spoken word and a variety of visual mediums such as acrylics, oil pastels, mixed media, and collages, specifically the practice of transforming her physical and digital collages into larger scale paintings and drawings using mixed media materials. She finds ways to highlight her passion for black culture and art in her pieces and aims to bring awareness to the fleeting nature of life.

The focus of her work is always rooted in growth. Every time she creates a new piece of art, regardless of the medium, she always learns something new about herself and her creative process, and this growth does not happen when she creates inside her comfort zone. She grows from challenging herself creatively, which is why she has pushed herself to explore grief, loss, and legacy through her art-making. These are topics that challenge and push her outside of this comfort zone as someone who maintains a lighthearted mindset.

She received her bachelor's in psychology with minors in studio art and human services from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, and received her master's degree in Art Therapy and Counseling from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, Illinois. In her practice of art therapy, she believes her role is to create a safe and welcoming environment, and help guide the person she's working with through their art making, and the meaning-making process of their art. She also believes it is important not to disrupt what is already working for people, but rather utilize those tools in session to better align with her client's healing process.
